Anouk van Dijk will visit the United States to teach two workshops at Gibney Dance in New York City (June 13-16) and at BODYTRAFFIC's Summer Program in Los Angeles (June 19-22). This is an unique opportunity to work with the Creator of Countertechnique, and Artistic Director of Australian contemporary dance company Chunky Move.

About the workshops

Anouk van Dijk’s workshops will start with a Countertechnique class, which stretches, coordinates and strengthens the body, making the dancer sweat, build stamina and really move. The class is followed by a Countertechnique Practical Tools workshop, where selected tools from the Countertechnique Toolbox are investigated in depth. After lunch, you will learn current Chunky Move repertoire, referencing the Countertechnique tools, as well as creating new movement material.

About Anouk van Dijk and Chunky Move:

Anouk van Dijk is Artistic Director of Chunky Move, one of Australia’s leading contemporary dance companies, and the Creator of Countertechnique.

Van Dijk spent the first ten years of her career as a prominent dancer in the Netherlands. From early on, she was attracted to the creation of performance and from 1996 committed herself exclusively to the conception, creation and performance of her own work. After running her own Amsterdam-based company for 15 years, she was appointed Artistic Director of Chunky Move (Melbourne, Australia) in 2012.

Using contemporary Australian culture, social commentary and the tension between community and the individual as its springboard, Chunky Move’s artistic vision is driven by an investigation into the multifaceted possibilities of the body and its relationship to place, context and environment. Chunky Move is defined by its unpredictability and strives to explore the many possibilities of contemporary dance through cross-genre collaborations and cultural exchange.

Anouk van Dijk’s body of work provides an insight into the many facets of the human experience through the lens of contemporary dance. Defined by a pronounced physical language, the work itself ranges from intensely physical, abstract dance productions, to raw and concrete theatrical encounters. Her multilayered approach is reflected in the works she created for Chunky Move since 2012, ranging from site-specific works such as An Act of Now (2012) and Depth of Field (2015), to collaborations with German director / playwright Falk Richter in Complexity of Belonging (2014) and Singaporean multimedia artist / film maker Ho Tzu Nyen in Anti-Gravity (2017), to works staged for more conventional theatre spaces such as 247 Days (2013) and Rule of Thirds (2016). Countertechnique is central to the foundation of Anouk van Dijk’s work and the training of her dancers.

Through the biennial Countertechnique Teacher Trainer program, Anouk van Dijk and Master Teacher Nina Wollny trained 26 Countertechnique teachers to date, six of whom are based in the USA.
